Ares was said to have carried a shield, a sword, and a spear. He also wore armor and a helmet. Ares was big and strong. He was the god of war, but the Greeks did not like war because they fought a terrible one against Sparta for 27 years. They considered Ares a troublemaker, and like most troublemakers, he was cowardly and a bully. The goddess Athena was a much better fighter.
Ares was said to never stay loyal to one side or another in a war. He just enjoyed watching people fight. Ares does not appear in stories much. Ares liked to cause pain for others, but he complained when he got hurt. He never picked a fight with a god, but instead tried to fight other mortals, and still lost.
Although the Greeks did not like him, the ancient Romans did. They made him sound like a hero, and called him Mars (source: Ancient Greek Gods and Goddesses Facts for Kids)
