Athena is the goddess of wisdom and craft. She is the child of Zeus, and her symbol is the owl. She is usually shown fully armed, with her sword and shield (source: History for Kids). Athena taught people how to live well and think clearly. She also taught people about arts and crafts (source: Ancient Greek Gods and Goddesses Facts for Kids).
Athena and Poseidon
Athena and Poseidon never really got along with each other. For one thing, they were rivals at many things. Once, the people of a new city were looking for a god to look over them. Both Athena and the sea god Poseidon wanted the job. To impress the city, they both gave it special gifts. Poseidon struck the ground with his trident, and out came a river that he said could be used to travel anywhere. The city's citizens were impressed. However, Athena hit the ground with her spear, and out came an olive tree. She said that the tree could be used to make strong homes, tasty fruits, and a useful oil for cooking. The people enjoyed Athena's gift more and named their city Athens after Athena. Athens went on to become one of the greatest cities and the capital of Greece (source: Ancient Greek Gods and Goddesses Facts for Kids).
